Grandmother’s Homemaking Secrets: Tips Shared from Your Grandma

Welcome back, it’s Part Three!

In this post, I’ll conclude this series by sharing the responses from my friends on Instagram.

If you haven’t yet, go back and read parts one and two of Grandmother’s Homemaking Secrets: A Lesson on Mindset and Doing it All.

I Asked…Ya’ll Answered

Over on Instagram, I posted a question sticker to poll ya’ll about the best homemaking tips your grandma (or other female figure) had passed down to you. Or, what skill you learned from them.

Here’s the responses:

“Canning! Grandma, great aunt and Mom all taught me.”

“Canning”

“Wash the dishes as you work!”

“Proper way to hang laundry on the clothesline.”

“Never go to sleep with a sink full of dishes.”

“Always cover your jars after you get them out of the canner–it helps keep the cool air from getting to them.”

“Keep a dessert ready in case somebody drops in, you can feed them coffee and dessert.”

“Those who clean are not clean. Those who live without making a mess are truly clean.”

“Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

“Frying chicken and freezer corn!”

“Always have treats ready for unexpected guests. Keep up on the house, then you have time for hobbies.”

“How to cook intuitively! Just don’t ask us for the recipe.”

“By watching: I learned that my Granny had a constant routine…early morning until bedtime.”

Never Lose Your Connection

I was so blessed by hearing these responses! I’m grateful to everyone who shared with me what they have learned from their grandmothers. It is truly special to get a peak into the legacy these great women left.

Many of the responses were similar to my own answers. I think we can all agree that the generations before us had some wonderful wisdom, and it would benefit us greatly if we remember what they taught us.

I saw somewhere (maybe it was in an Amish story) that the worth of a daughter, meaning if she would make good wife-material, was how well she helped her mother keep house. This might sound archaic to our modern ears…we may even balk a little bit at the use of such language.

But really…strip it all down and look at our lives.

We are happier…we are less stressed…and we are more loving and less likely to be in a bad mood when our house is clean.

Is it really that simple?

Our excuses abound…the cries of “I don’t have time” ring around our home like a chaotic chorus.

Take the time. Clean the kitchen, make the meal, and love your family.

Remember how Granny did it.

Watch the burdens of life feel a little less heavy on your mama shoulders when you sit in a clean space to drink your morning coffee and read your Bible. Then get your big-girl pants on and start your work.

I hope this series has blessed you as much as it has me.

Thank you for your kind feedback! It is just amazing to know that so many of you needed and even want to hear these things preached to you! I know for sure that I need these reminders pretty much constantly.

Let’s continue encouraging one another to do the good work of homemaking.

Be on guard and don’t let the world, or funny little social media posts, steal your joy in your work at home.

We’re in a battle, and us Mama’s are the warriors! Let’s view our homemaking in light of these things.
